I bet you will agree with me when I tell you that prayer is powerful! Prayer is probably the most underestimated action that any Christian ever considers.

The Prayer of Jabez is a prayer that is found in the Old Testament book of 1 Chronicles and has been a popular focus in recent years because of a book that was written by Bruce Wilkinson.

Bruce Wilkonson, the author of “The Prayer of Jabez“, is a Christian teacher and author. He was born in New Jersey and graduated from Northeastern Bible College, Dallas Theological Seminary, and Western Conservative Baptist Seminary.

The actual prayer of Jabez is found in:

1 Chronicles 4:9–10 “And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow. 10 And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.

That is the primary portion of scripture that we learn pretty much everything we know about Jabez from. Although it doesn’t seem like much, we can learn quite a bit if we take the time to meditate on it.

7 Best Prayer of Jabez Insights

We need to understand right here at the beginning that the prayer of Jabez is not some magical prayer that will make all your dreams come true. However, the Lord saw fit to include it in the scriptures for a reason.

These insights into the prayer of Jabez are an effort to unpack the reason why God put these verses in the Bible. God obviously wants us to read them, and to learn a few things from the prayer of Jabez, and the short lesson we learn about his life.

  1. Prayer of Jabez Insight #1 – He was Honorable.

In 1 Chronicles 4:9 it says that “Jabez was more honorable than his brethren”.

Without a doubt, the Lord points this fact out as the finer point of Jabez’ character. Today, it is knowing Christ that changes us and makes us more like Him. Nothing is more honorable than being like Jesus.

Proverbs 15:33 “The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility.”

2. Prayer of Jabez Insight #2 – He knew the one true God.

There is no point in praying to a false God. Only one God can hear your prayers and answer them. There is only one way to come into His presence and that is the cross of Christ.

John 14:6 “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

Isaiah 45:5 “I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me:”

3. Prayer of Jabez Insight #3 – He called on God in prayer.

Prayer is a powerful thing that is neglected by most Christians today. If we do not call on God in prayer, then there is no prayer for Him to answer. In the prayer of Jabez, we must recognize the simple fact of praying to the one true God.

Jeremiah 33:3 Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.

4. Prayer of Jabez Insight #4 – He asked for God’s blessing.

There could have been any number of things that Jabez prayed for or could have prayed for. The Lord only points out that he prayed and asked God to bless him. In fact, it says “bless me INDEED”.

This sound familiar to what Jacob did in:

Genesis 32:26 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.

5. Prayer of Jabez Insight #5 – He wanted God’s presence in his life.

1 Chronicles 4:10 “And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.”

This is no doubt the primary thing that God treasured about the prayer of Jabez. The Lord took notice of a man that loved Him, and wanted to spend time with him. Jabez understood not only that God is the source of all blessing, but that God is good!

Psalm 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

6. Prayer of Jabez Insight #6 – He despised evil and the grief it causes.

Another thing that stands out is that Jabez despised evil, and knew that he needed the Lord’s help to avoid it in his life. There is a great deal of wisdom in that thought, and God draws our attention to that, in the prayer of Jabez as well.

Proverbs 8:13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.

Proverbs 14:16 A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is confident.

7. Prayer of Jabez Insight #7 – He had his prayer answered.

Because of these wonderful things about the prayer of Jabez, the Lord saw fit to forever record them in the scriptures.

Someday in Heaven, I look forward to meeting this dear man of God, and getting filled with the rest of the story, and how it all turned out.
