Proverbs 8:1–4 “Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice? 2 She standeth in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths. 3 She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors. 4 Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man.”
When President McKinley took the oath of office as President of the United States, he placed his lips on these words: “Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people, that is so great.” Though advanced to the highest honor possible, yet he was deeply conscious of his responsibility; and also felt his need of divine assistance.
Just after the inauguration, Rev. W. V. Morrison of New England, who had been one of Mr. McKinley’s teachers when a boy, called upon the President. When leaving, Mr. Morrison said, “You have a great responsibility devolving upon you, but the love and confidence of the American people are behind you.” The president replied: “I hope I shall have the sympathy and prayers of yourself and all good people.”
As we see in our verses for the day, wisdom is like a lady that is crying out for men to pay attention to her. You don’t have to have the responsibilities of a president or King Solomon to understand that.
However, to continue with God’s analogy, wisdom is often a neglected lady. Christian men today are regularly distracted by the cares of life, and too busy to pursue the value of wisdom with any real discipline.
It is here that we have the great benefit of God’s Word and the power of prayer.
It says in – James 1:5–8 “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. 7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. 8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.”
God is able to give you the wisdom that you need in life, through his Word. But you must desire her far above the strange woman, in Proverbs 7.
2 Peter 1:3 “According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:”
